The station first went on air on October 15, 1953, as KPTH. It was the first television station in Des Moines and was originally affiliated with CBS. In 1955, the station’s call letters were changed to KCCI, standing for Central Iowa Communications Corporation (the station’s owner at the time).

In 1982, KCCI became an ABC affiliate after WHO-TV (channel 13) switched to NBC. The switch was made because ABC was looking for a stronger affiliate in Des Moines ( WHO-TV had been the weakest of the three major networks’ affiliates in the market).
