KCRA-TV is a television channel in Sacramento, California. It is an NBC affiliate, and its transmitter is located on Walnut Hill in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The station first signed on the air on September 3, 1953, as KHSL-TV. It was founded by the Sacramento Union newspaper, which also owned KHSL radio (1240 AM, now KHTK). The station was originally an affiliate of the DuMont Television Network.
In 1955, the station was purchased by Viacom and became an affiliate of the CBS Television Network. In 1969, Viacom sold the station to Metropolitan Broadcasting (later named Metromedia), which made it an affiliate of the NBC Television Network. In 1972, the station’s call letters were changed to KCRA-TV to match its radio sister station.
Today, KCRA-TV is owned by Hearst Television and is one of the most popular television stations in Sacramento. It broadcasts a variety of news and entertainment programming and is the home of KCRA 3 News – Sacramento’s #1 rated news program.
