The station was founded in 1953, and it was originally owned by the Omaha World-Herald Company. In 1955, the station was acquired by the Metropolitan Broadcasting Corporation.

In 1961, the station’s call letters were changed to KMTV, and it became an affiliate of the ABC network. In 1966, the station was sold to the Tribune Company.

In 1982, the station was acquired by Gannett Company. In 1997, the station became an affiliate of the CBS network.
